Tactical Breakdown
Five build-up patterns that will decide the knockout rounds
By Marcus Ellery · 12 min read · 15 September 2026

Knockout football rewards teams that can produce a clean first pass under pressure. Everything else is negotiable.
Five patterns now dominate the elite level, and each one has a specific failure mode.
The salida lavolpiana
A midfielder drops between the centre-backs to create a three. It solves numerical pressure but concedes the midfield third if the drop is automatic rather than conditional.
The inverted full-back
Central occupation improves, wide isolation improves, and the rest defence weakens. The trade is now well priced by opponents.
The false rotation
Two attackers swap positions to drag markers out of their zones. It works once per half against organised defences.
The goalkeeper as playmaker
Ten outfield players become eleven. The risk is measured in seconds, not passes.
The direct reset
The most underrated pattern in Europe: a long ball aimed at nobody, played to force a second-ball contest in the opposition half.
The teams that survive February will be the ones that can switch between all five inside a single match.
